ASYMMETRIC CONTRIBUTION OF WARM SPRING TO ECOSYSTEM CO2 EXCHANGE DURING THE EXTREME SUMMER OF 2018 IN EUROPE

Pongratz, trendy modellers    In the past two decades, Europe was stricken by major summer heatwaves and drought, with heavy impacts on food production, public health, air pollution and ecosystem carbon uptake (Barriopedro et al., 2010; Ciais et al. 2005, Flach et al., 2018[PC1] ) (1,2). Each of the 2003 and 2010 events in central Europe and western Russia respectively (HW2003, HW2010) broke, at the time, the 500+-yr long temperature record over the continent (1). Though outstanding at the time, such extreme events could become relatively common by the end of the century (1). In 2018 the European summer land temperature anomaly broke yet again the 500+-yr record of 2010, although with distinct spatio-temporal patterns (Barriopedro et al., BAMS, in revision).  The 2018 summer was characterized by extreme drought in central and northeastern Europe, with several countries having major costs due to crop losses. This presentation will address the problem of soil moisture legacy effects from spring to summer and from summer to autumn during the HW2018, based on model simulations
