Session 2 - Pathogen biology, population genetics & genomics

Dr. Elodie GAULIN is a microbiologist working on pathogenicity determinants of oomycetes. Since 2003, she is Assistant Professor at the Laboratoire de Recherche en Sciences Végétales (LRSV, CNRS / Toulouse III University / Toulouse-INP), France. During her PhD and postdoc, she developed an expertise on secreted proteins from Phytophthora species that play a structural role for the pathogen and trigger also immune reactions during host infection. At the LRSV, she developed genomic and transcriptomic approaches on several Aphanomyces species. The main goal of her research is to identify key determinants of pathogenicity by working on A. euteiches and the legume model Medicago truncatula. Accordingly, the AphanoDB database was developed (https://polebio.lrsv.ups-tlse.fr/aphanoDB/) to store ‘omics’ data (i.e. genome, transcriptome) related to the Aphanomyces genus. By data mining of genomic sequences in combination with expression analysis, she identified a large set of small secreted proteins, called effectors, that can mediate infection. She is mainly working on the Crinklers (CRN) family or the Small Secreted Proteins (SSPs) family that contains hundreds of members. Using functional analyses she identified that some CRNs and SSPs trigger either nuclear DNA damage or perturb nucleic-associated protein to enhance infection.
